A spokesperson for Muntaka Mubarak and senior National Democratic Congress (NDC) figure has criticised recent comments by the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, over the 2023 reshuffle of the party’s parliamentary leadership, cautioning against actions that could fuel internal divisions.
In a statement issued on Friday, May 22, Nasir Gardenboi, spokesperson to Muntaka Mubarak, said political disappointment should not become “a basis for rewriting history or unfairly attacking colleagues in pursuit of power.”
The remarks followed comments made by Asiedu Nketiah during the NDC’s “Thank You” tour in the Tamale South constituency, where he defended the party’s controversial 2023 decision to replace Haruna Iddrisu as Minority Leader ahead of the 2024 general election.
According to Asiedu Nketiah, the reshuffle formed part of a broader political strategy aimed at repositioning the NDC for victory in the 2024 elections. He argued that the party’s eventual electoral success vindicated the decision.
The NDC Chairman also disclosed that John Dramani Mahama, who was then the party’s presidential candidate, had initially opposed the leadership changes, but party executives proceeded because they believed the reshuffle was necessary for the party’s electoral prospects.
However, Gardenboi rejected suggestions that the parliamentary leadership changes alone were responsible for the NDC’s return to power.
“The victory was the product of collective sacrifice, strategic planning, and the tireless efforts of party faithful across the country,” he stated.
He further urged senior party figures to make public comments that strengthen party cohesion rather than deepen internal tensions.
Gardenboi warned that certain narratives risk creating the perception that respected Muslim and Northern leaders within the party were being unfairly singled out.
“Such perceptions, whether intended or not, risk deepening divisions at a time when unity should be our greatest strength,” the statement added.
The latest exchange, however, highlights lingering tensions within sections of the party over decisions taken ahead of the 2024 elections and the role they played in the NDC’s political comeback.
