‘No Leadership, Poor Organization’: …Athletes Slam Authorities at Athletics Championships

Published:

The ongoing 24th edition of the African Athletics Championships in Accra has come under criticism from athletes, journalists and some officials over what they describe as poor organisation and logistical challenges affecting the continental competition.

Concerns raised by participants include transportation delays, inadequate communication, accreditation difficulties, scheduling inconsistencies and limited access to competition and media facilities, particularly internet connectivity.

Several athletes participating in the championship have complained about long waiting hours for transport between hotels and competition venues, while others have expressed frustration over delays in event schedules and what they describe as insufficient coordination by organisers.

Some journalists covering the event have also cited challenges with accreditation processing, poor internet connectivity, inadequate workspace arrangements and difficulties accessing timely competition information.

The championship, which has attracted athletes and officials from across the continent, was expected to showcase Ghana’s readiness to host major international sporting events.

However, the operational setbacks and logistical concerns have affected the overall experience for competitors, officials and media personnel attending the event.

Despite the challenges, competitions have continued across various track and field disciplines, with athletes competing for medals and qualification opportunities.

The 24th African Athletics Championships remains one of Africa’s premier athletics competitions, bringing together elite athletes from across the continent to compete in multiple sporting disciplines.
