Bawumia Whips All To Win NPP Presidential Race

Published:

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the clear winner of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, according to provisional national results available to JoyNews.

Early tallies from across the country indicate that Dr. Bawumia has crossed the crucial 50 percent threshold required to avoid a runoff, positioning him as the flagbearer-elect to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.

The provisional figures show Dr. Bawumia polling 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 percent of total valid votes cast by party delegates nationwide. His closest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, garnered 46,554 votes (23.76 percent), followed by Dr. Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53 percent).

The remaining candidates trailed significantly, with Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum receiving 1,999 votes (1.02 percent) and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong securing 402 votes (0.21 percent).

These figures, collated from constituency and regional centres shortly after the close of polls, reveal a commanding and mathematically unassailable lead for Dr. Bawumia, making the possibility of a second-round contest virtually impossible.

The NPP primary, which saw more than 200,000 delegates voting across 333 polling centres, was widely regarded as a defining moment for the party as it seeks to reorganise and reposition itself for the next electoral cycle following the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia, who previously served as Vice President for two terms under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, campaigned on a message of continuity, digital transformation, and economic restructuring, themes that appear to have resonated strongly with the party’s grassroots delegates.

Party executives and supporters across several regions have already begun celebrations as news of the provisional outcome spreads, with many describing the result as a decisive mandate for the former Vice President.

Dr. Bawumia will become the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections, setting the stage for what promises to be an intense political contest in the years ahead.
