The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano North in the Ashanti Region, Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh, has called on delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite behind former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday, January 31.
Dr. Bawumia, who served as running mate to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in four consecutive elections, is contesting alongside four other aspirants for the NPP’s 2026 flagbearer position.
With just days to the polls, Mr Agyemang-Prempeh said Dr. Bawumia’s extensive experience in government and his national appeal make him the most suitable candidate to lead the party back to power in the 2028 general elections.
According to the MP, the NPP, now in opposition, must reflect on its past mistakes and remain united if it is to regain the confidence of the Ghanaian electorate.
“Today, we are in opposition and it is important for us to learn from our mistakes,” he said. “I believe that if we stay united behind our flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, we will be able to win.”
He further urged delegates to rally massively behind the former Vice President, describing him as a candidate who has already gained significant national recognition.
“He has already been marketed, so let us all unite and rally behind him with our full force on 31st January so that he can lead us to victory,” Mr Agyemang-Prempeh added.
The Ahafo Ano North MP also criticised some members of the party whom he accused of undermining the NPP despite having benefited significantly from the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.
“It’s sad that those who benefitted from government are those derailing the progress of the NPP and they turn around to blame others,” he lamented.
The NPP presidential primaries will see five candidates contesting for the party’s flagbearer slot as it positions itself for the 2028 general elections.
