Samira Bawumia Hosts Africa Women and Children Conference Today with Focus on Youth, Innovation and Climate Impact

Published:

Africa’s leading platform for youth and women in climate leadership, the Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC), has announced the return of its second edition, scheduled for October 6–7, 2025, at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.

Themed “Young Voices, Innovative Ideas, Greater Impact for Africa,” the 2025 conference aims to amplify youth-driven innovation and women-led climate solutions across the continent. The event will build on the success of its 2023 debut, which attracted African leaders, international partners, and grassroots organisations dedicated to advancing inclusive climate action.

Organised by the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP), AFRIWOCC has evolved from a policy forum into a year-round platform championing climate inclusion and resilience. The upcoming conference is expected to host over 500 delegates representing governments, civil society, academia, development organisations, and climate-focused networks across Africa and the diaspora.

The maiden edition, held in 2023 under the theme “Amplifying the Voices of Women and Children in Climate Action,” featured distinguished figures such as former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Samira Bawumia, Monica Geingos, First Lady of Namibia, and Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, former President of the African Development Bank.

That inaugural gathering culminated in a six-point communiqué advocating gender-responsive policies, youth inclusion, adaptation financing, and community resilience strategies. Since then, AFRIWOCC has earned continental recognition for placing women, children, and vulnerable groups at the centre of Africa’s climate discourse.

Addressing Africa’s Climate Crisis

Although Africa contributes less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the continent remains one of the hardest hit by climate impacts — including floods, droughts, desertification, and rising sea levels. Women and children, in particular, bear the brunt of these challenges.

Ghana has in recent years grappled with flash floods, coastal erosion, and erratic rainfall, disrupting livelihoods and agriculture. Against this backdrop, AFRIWOCC 2025 seeks to serve as both a policy platform and an innovation incubator, connecting policymakers, innovators, and communities to co-create actionable climate solutions.

Key Highlights

The two-day conference will feature:
• Panel discussions on climate financing, Africa’s COP strategies, and intergenerational policy development.
• Showcases of youth and women-led innovations across renewable energy, green technology, and sustainable agriculture.
• Workshops on green jobs, adolescent health, and gender-smart infrastructure.
• A high-level AFRIWOCC Pledge Board, mobilising commitments for inclusive and accountable climate action.

Confirmed keynote speakers include H.E. Ramatoulaye Diallo N’diaye of the Great Green Wall of Africa and H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the AfCFTA Secretariat. Other notable guests include Tenioye Majekodunni and Damilola Ogunbiyi, both celebrated champions of climate resilience and sustainable energy.

The conference will also feature a special climate concert to engage the public and raise awareness about sustainable lifestyles.

Participation and Registration

AFRIWOCC 2025 is open to African youth leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, grassroots organisations, private sector actors, development partners, and global climate advocates. Opportunities are available for research paper submissions, exhibitions, and sponsorships via the official website: www.afriwocc.org.
