The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun vetting aspirants seeking to lead the party into the next general election, a key step aimed at ensuring transparency, fairness, and compliance with its internal regulations.
The process will determine which candidates make it onto the ballot for what is expected to be one of the most competitive flagbearership races in the party’s recent history.
Former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who served under the Akufo-Addo administration, is among the leading contenders. He and his colleagues are expected to present their political vision, leadership credentials, and strategies to unite the party ahead of the 2028 polls.
Dr. Bawumia faces stiff competition from four other prominent figures:
• Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary.
• Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, businessman and former MP for Assin Central.
• Dr. Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture.
• Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, MP for Bosomtwe and former Education Minister.
Party officials say the vetting committee will thoroughly assess the aspirants’ track records and readiness to lead, before clearing them to officially enter the race.
The outcome of the vetting is highly anticipated, as the NPP seeks a leader capable of consolidating its base, attracting new voters, and mounting a strong challenge in the next general election.
