Former Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Ibrahim Bashiru, has thrown his full support behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) strongest contender to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an interview, Alhaji Bashiru called on party members to unite behind Dr. Bawumia as the NPP prepares for its 2026 presidential primaries.
“I support one person — he is the person whom everybody in this country, especially in the NPP, believes that if they really want power in 2028, they must vote for him,” Bashiru stated.
He praised Dr. Bawumia as a humble, visionary, and results-driven leader whose track record in public service positions him as the most capable among the party’s emerging presidential hopefuls.
“Dr. Bawumia is calm, has innovative ideas, and is well prepared for the presidency. I do not see that in anybody else’s face — I see that only in the face of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP in the 2024 presidential elections, is yet to formally declare his intention to run again but is widely seen as a frontrunner in the upcoming flagbearer race.
Bashiru’s endorsement comes in the wake of the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, officially opening nominations for the party’s 2026 presidential primaries. Interested aspirants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of GHS100,000.
The party is scheduled to elect its next flagbearer on January 31, 2026.
So far, notable contenders who have picked nomination forms include:
• Former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong
• Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong
• Former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum
• Abetifi MP and Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong
