Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has unveiled Ghana Music Xperience (GMX), a new music streaming platform built in Ghana to promote and support local artists.

During the launch of the GMX app which is meant to boost local music industry, Dr. Bawumia emphasised that GMX aims to bridge the gap between Ghanaian musicians and their audiences both locally and globally.He highlighted the value of Ghana’s music industry, noting the joy, comfort, and hope that Ghanaian musicians bring to people through their talent and dedication.

In his speech, Dr. Bawumia addressed a critical issue facing Ghanaian musicians: inadequate compensation from foreign streaming platforms. “They receive very little from the foreign music streaming apps,” he added.

GMX, according to Dr. Bawumia, is designed to ensure that Ghanaian artists receive fair rewards and that their work and legacies are preserved. “This is what the Ghana Music Xperience, which is more than just a music streaming app, offers,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia underscored the significance of having a music platform dedicated solely to Ghanaian artists. “In the midst of having myriad streaming platforms, having one that is purely dedicated to Ghanaian music and musicians, is a welcome addition in our digitalization journey as a country,” he added.

Pointing out the challenges local musicians face with piracy and foreign streaming services, Dr. Bawumia explained how these factors prevent artists from capitalising on their strong fan base within Ghana. “The vast fan base of every Ghanaian musician is Ghanaian, yet they do not make enough money from this strong fan base at home,” he stated, expressing confidence that GMX will shift this dynamic.

The NPP presidential candidate encouraged all Ghanaians to support the platform, voicing optimism about the future of Ghanaian music.

“I am very confident that with the support of all of us, through the patronage of the GMX, the game will now change for our musicians and industry to get their deserved compensation,” he added.

With GMX now officially launched, industry stakeholders are hopeful that this platform will mark a new chapter for Ghanaian music, empowering artists and amplifying their reach and impact both at home and abroad.
