Spanish duo Rodri and Aitana Bonmati were named the best players in world football at the 2024 Ballon d’Or awards ceremony in Paris on Monday (28 October).
Barcelona Femini midfielder Bonmati won the Ballon d’Or Feminin for a second consecutive year after winning every possible trophy at club level last season, as Barcelona secured a historic quadruple.
Manchester City midfielder Rodri meanwhile won the men’s prize, overcoming Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr, which led to the Spanish club snubbing the ceremony in France.
Among the other winners are, Real Madrid’s coach who won best men’s coach of the year with Former Chelsea Women’s coach winning best women’s coach of the year. Barcelona’s youngster, Lamine Yamal won the Kopa trophy for best young player of the year. Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe and Bayern Munich star and England captain, Harry Kane shared the Gerd Muller award.
The Lev Yachin award for the best goalkeeper of the year went to Argentina and Aston Villa shot-stopper, Emiliano Martinez. As Real Madrid’s men team take club of the year for best men’s club, Barcelona Femini takes best women’s club of the year. Jennifer Hermoso also won the Socrates award at the just ended Ballon d’or event.
