President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that his administration will require $1.7 billion to complete the unfinished Agenda 111 hospital projects across the country. Speaking at a meeting with the Christian Council, Mahama highlighted the dire state of the project, revealing that nearly 90 hospitals remain incomplete, while some of the few completed ones lack essential infrastructure to function properly.
“Now we need $1.7 billion to complete the Agenda 111 projects,” Mahama stated.
Agenda 111, a flagship initiative of the previous government, was aimed at expanding Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure by constructing 111 district and specialized hospitals. However, according to Mahama, the initiative has largely stalled, with most of the projects left unfinished.
“The previous government started Agenda 111 but has not been able to finish the hospitals. There are so many of them unfinished. Even the ones they commissioned don’t have a single bed,” he noted.
To address this challenge, Mahama suggested that religious organizations step in to support the completion of some of these hospitals.
“If the missions have a hospital in an area, we are not coming to compete with the missions by building a hospital,” he explained, implying a need for collaboration rather than duplication of efforts.
