The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has petitioned members of the Diplomatic Community in Ghana, accusing the John Mahama-led administration of orchestrating arbitrary harassment against political opponents and ordinary citizens.
In his complaint, Assafuah alleged that recent actions by the government reflect a deliberate attempt to intimidate opposition figures and silence dissent. He maintained that such developments threaten Ghana’s democratic credentials and risk undermining the rule of law.
“The harassment of political opponents and citizens is fast becoming a tool of governance under President Mahama. This is unacceptable in a democratic state,” the Old Tafo legislator stated.
He called on Ghana’s international partners to closely monitor the situation and urge the government to uphold democratic norms, stressing that freedom of expression and political participation must be protected.
Assafuah’s petition comes at a time of heightened political tension, with opposition parties accusing the government of using state institutions to target critics. The Mahama administration, however, has consistently denied such claims, insisting its actions are within the ambit of the law.
