MFWA Boss Warns NDC Against Corruption: ‘RESET Agenda Is Not About Continuing State-Fleecing Deals’

Published:

Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has cautioned the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) against perpetuating corruption and state-fleecing practices.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Braimah reminded the party that Ghanaians voted for change, not for the continuation of questionable contracts and deals inherited from the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

“The RESET agenda did not simply mean NDC replacing NPP and continuing with the state-fleecing deals and contracts signed under the NPP government,” he wrote. “The RESET agenda meant NDC coming into power to reverse all the wrongs under the previous regime (and there were so many) and holding all those who committed any wrongs accountable.”

Citing examples, he questioned why major corruption issues raised at the start of the Mahama government had gone silent.
“At the beginning of this government, we heard loud noise about ECG Containers. The loud noise suddenly went silent as if nothing had happened. What happened? Who did anything wrong in the past regime, and who is being held accountable? What happened with the ECG Containers?” he asked.

He raised similar concerns about the cocoa jute sack saga, demanding accountability. “Suddenly, the noise went silent. Who did something wrong in the past regime? What has happened, and who is being held accountable?”

Mr. Braimah warned NDC appointees against endorsing or continuing corrupt practices, stressing that they would be exposed.
“If you are a Minister or a CEO under the Mahama regime, who inherited a corrupt contract or practice in your sector, and you are bent on continuing with it, you are an enemy, not only to the RESET Agenda, but to the nation. You can continue. But know that you will be exposed soon.”

His caution comes at a time when the NDC’s General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, has publicly accused some party lawyers of working against government’s anti-corruption drive by attempting to cut deals for persons facing prosecution.

“Despite the fact that pleas and pressure are coming from the public that punishment has to be meted out and this must be done properly, some among us are busy trying to cut deals with people who are supposed to be prosecuted,” Mr. Kwetey said at the 5th Annual General Conference of NDC lawyers.

Though he refrained from naming names, Mr. Kwetey stressed that those involved know themselves and risk exposure.

The warnings from both Mr. Braimah and Mr. Kwetey underscore mounting concerns that the government’s much-touted “RESET Agenda” could be undermined by internal sabotage and a failure to deliver on its promise of accountability.
