General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has weighed in on Ghana’s ongoing debate over LGBTQ rights, cautioning against the outright criminalization of individuals based on differences in identity, beliefs and sexuality.
In an exclusive interview with TV3, Fifi Kwetey emphasized the importance of tolerance and human rights in a democratic society. He stated, “We need to always have the capacity to appreciate the fact that I differ with people does not mean I must criminalise those people”.
The discussion surrounding LGBTQ rights in Ghana remains argumentative. The 8th Parliament of Ghana passed the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities and advocacy. President Mahama earlier this year, pledged to the clergy the bill will be reintroduced to parliament as a government bill rather than a private member’s bill.
While Kwetey did not explicitly support LGBTQ rights, his statement suggests a call for dialogue rather than punitive measures. He further called for a broader consultation to be done before reintroducing the bill in the 9th Parliament.
As the debate rages on, the fate of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill remains uncertain even though President Mahama has pledged the bill will be reintroduced and voices like Fifi Kwetey’s add another layer to the evolving national conversation.
