The just-ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary did not only produce a decisive winner in former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, but also delivered a closely contested race for second place between Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Dr. Bryan Acheampong.
Provisional results from across the country show that Kennedy Agyapong narrowly held on to the second position, fending off a strong challenge from Bryan Acheampong in what many observers have described as one of the most competitive aspects of the primary.
While Dr. Bawumia cruised past the 50 percent threshold to secure the flagbearer slot outright, attention in several constituencies shifted to the battle unfolding between the two contenders for runner-up status.
Kennedy Agyapong eventually secured 46,554 votes (23.76 percent), with Bryan Acheampong polling 36,303 votes (18.53 percent) — a margin that, although clear in the final tally, reflected intense competition throughout the counting process in many regions.
At various stages of the collation, figures from key constituencies suggested that Bryan Acheampong was closing in rapidly, raising the prospect of Kennedy Agyapong slipping to third place before the final numbers stabilised.
Political observers note that Bryan Acheampong’s performance signals a growing influence within the party’s delegate base, particularly among constituencies where his campaign message appeared to resonate strongly.
For Kennedy Agyapong, maintaining the second position is seen as significant in preserving his standing within the party hierarchy, especially after mounting an energetic nationwide campaign ahead of the primary.
Although the contest ultimately had no bearing on the final outcome of the flagbearer race, the close battle between the two aspirants has become a key talking point in the aftermath of the primary.
With the primary concluded, the party has called on all aspirants and their supporters to unite behind Dr. Bawumia as the NPP begins preparations toward the 2028 general elections.
