Former Majority Leader and senior stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has thrown his weight behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing the former Vice President as the right person to lead the party into the future.
Speaking on Channel One TV, the veteran legislator said Dr. Bawumia meets all the constitutional and moral criteria required of an NPP flagbearer.
“Article 13, clause 7 of the party’s constitution says that whoever should lead the party or aspire to lead the party, regardless of class, religion, creed, or social status, should have been an active member of the party for a minimum of five years. Bawumia, in my view, satisfies that condition,” Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained.
He further lauded Dr. Bawumia’s integrity and personal discipline, stating that leadership goes beyond experience — it requires moral strength and good character.
“The second thing is that the person should be of good character. And Dr. Bawumia is of impeccable character,” he emphasized.
Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s comments come at a critical time as the NPP introspects following its 2024 electoral defeat and debates the kind of leadership needed to rejuvenate the party’s base ahead of the next general election.
The party’s internal discussions have intensified in recent weeks, with several leading figures publicly expressing views on who should take up the mantle after the 2024 loss.
For Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who has served the party for decades and played a key role in parliamentary leadership, Dr. Bawumia embodies both the constitutional qualifications and the moral compass necessary to unify and rebuild the NPP.
“We are at a point where the party needs not just experience but a leader who commands trust, demonstrates humility, and understands the needs of the ordinary Ghanaian. Dr. Bawumia has proven that,” he added.
Since the NPP’s exit from government, Dr. Bawumia has remained active within the party, engaging grassroots members, policy think tanks, and youth groups, including TESCON, as part of efforts to reenergize the base.
His leadership bid has drawn endorsements from various regional executives and MPs, while others within the party have called for open competition and broader consultation ahead of the next presidential primaries.
