Dr. Bawumia Mourns Pope Francis, Joins World Leaders in Honoring His Legacy

Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has joined global leaders in mourning the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away in the early hours of Easter Monday, April 21, 2025.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on his official Facebook page, Dr. Bawumia expressed his deep sorrow over the passing of the Catholic Pontiff, describing him as a symbol of peace, humility, and unity.

“It is with deep grief that I learned of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” Dr. Bawumia wrote. He extended his “most sincere condolences” to the Catholic community in Ghana and around the world, urging all to reflect on the Pope’s life of service and inclusivity.

Dr. Bawumia recalled his personal encounter with Pope Francis during a visit last year, noting the profound impression the Pope left on him. “The late Pope was a man of unwavering peace and compassion. He lived a life of inclusiveness and humility, which was admired by many around the world,” he stated. “His true essence and outlook on life was to live pure and right.”

The Vatican confirmed Pope Francis’s passing on Easter Monday, April 21. His Eminence, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, officially announced the Pope’s death with “deepest sorrow.” Pope Francis had been grappling with various health challenges in recent years and spent 38 days in hospital between February and March this year. Despite his health concerns, the Pope made a public appearance on Easter Sunday, waving to thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

Tributes have since poured in from world leaders across continents, many of whom took to platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) to honor the Pope’s extraordinary spiritual leadership. Widely seen as a reformer, Pope Francis was known for his humble lifestyle, his efforts to modernize the Catholic Church, and his emphasis on social justice and interfaith dialogue.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Bawumia called on all to find inspiration in the Pope’s enduring legacy. “May his legacy inspire us as we continue to pursue our individual mandates on earth,” he said.
