Ghana’s former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Muhammadu Buhari, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who passed away in London on Saturday, July 13, 2025.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Bawumia described the late Nigerian leader as a “fine gentleman” who demonstrated deep concern for the welfare of his people, especially the poor.

“I have learnt with immense sadness, the passing of H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. President Buhari was a fine gentleman who was passionate about his people, especially the poor,” Bawumia wrote.

He added: “Samira and I extend our condolences to his family and the good people of Nigeria. May the Almighty Allah extend His grace to him and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.”

News of Buhari’s passing was confirmed by Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to the late president, in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Ahmad posted.

President Buhari, 82, was a towering figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, having served as both a military head of state (1983–1985) and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. Known for his firm anti-corruption stance, Buhari spearheaded several reforms aimed at strengthening public accountability and rebuilding Nigeria’s economy.

His presidency was marked by efforts to improve infrastructure, combat terrorism, and expand social welfare programs, particularly targeting the country’s most vulnerable populations.

His passing has triggered an outpouring of condolences from African leaders, regional blocs, and citizens across the continent who remember him as a leader committed to national service and integrity.

President Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and several children. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
