Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on African leaders to adopt innovative strategies and harness technology as a driving force for economic growth and development. Speaking at the 27th Annual Conference at Harvard University in Boston, themed Beyond Borders: A Myth or a Mandate for Africa’s Progress?, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the transformative potential of digitalization for the continent.
“Policymakers must act with a mindset of possibilities. We should embrace technology and not be intimidated by it. We must believe that we can leapfrog advanced nations in many areas if we put our minds to it,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia reflected on Ghana’s economic history, highlighting the challenges posed by an informal system that persisted for over six decades post-independence. Despite these challenges, he acknowledged the progress being made to shift toward a more structured, data-driven economy capable of thriving in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
“Today, we are building formal systems and a database-driven economy to compete in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Our challenge is to use digitalization to solve current problems while laying the foundation for future jobs, leapfrogging from the Second to the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” he remarked.
Dr. Bawumia’s address underscored the need for African nations to adopt forward-thinking policies that prioritize innovation and technology. He argued that with the right mindset and determination, African countries could bypass traditional development pathways and achieve accelerated growth in key areas.
As Africa continues to grapple with issues such as unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to global markets, Dr. Bawumia believes digital transformation offers a unique opportunity to address these challenges and create a sustainable foundation for future economic success.
The conference provided a platform for policymakers, academics, and industry leaders to explore Africa’s progress and the role of cross-border collaboration in achieving the continent’s development goals. Dr. Bawumia’s remarks served as a rallying call for leaders to reimagine Africa’s future through the lens of technology and innovation.
