Bawumia Visits Hawa Koomson, Akua Afriyie After Violent Ablekuma North Rerun; Pledges Support for Assaulted Party Agents

Published:

Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has visited several party members and polling agents who were assaulted during the July 11 rerun elections in the Ablekuma North constituency, Greater Accra Region.

Dr. Bawumia’s visit on Sunday, July 13, included a stop at the residence of former Awutu Senya East MP and former Minister for Fisheries, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who was brutally attacked by unknown thugs during the chaotic rerun. A viral video showed the NPP stalwart crawling on the ground in distress after being physically assaulted at one of the polling centres.

In a heartfelt post on social media, Hawa Koomson expressed her gratitude for the gesture:

“This morning, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his team visited me at my residence to check on my health after I was brutally assaulted by thugs during the Ablekuma North rerun. My family and I are extremely grateful for this thoughtful gesture.”

The NPP flagbearer also extended his visit to NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who also suffered injuries during the violence, and several party polling agents who sustained various degrees of harm in the course of the rerun exercise.

Dr. Bawumia assured the victims of full support, including covering their medical bills. He commended their dedication to the party and promised that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.

“The party stands with you. Your courage and commitment in the face of violence are deeply appreciated,” he said.

The rerun election, held in 19 polling stations, followed months of legal disputes and controversy surrounding the 2024 parliamentary results in Ablekuma North, a constituency that had been a stronghold of the NPP for nearly three decades.

After a tense rerun marred by violence and voter intimidation, Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was declared the winner, polling 34,090 votes against Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie’s 33,881 — a margin of 209 votes. A total of 411 ballots were rejected.

Prior to the rerun, Afriyie had been leading by a razor-thin margin of 48 votes — with 32,512 votes to Aubynn’s 32,464.

The final outcome marks a significant political shift in Ablekuma North, which the NPP had held for 28 years. It also brings to a close a protracted electoral dispute that had heightened tensions in the area.

Several civil society organisations, political stakeholders, and observers have condemned the violence that marred the rerun, calling for swift investigations and justice for the victims. The Ghana Police Service has launched a probe into the incidents, vowing to bring perpetrators to book.
