Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the overwhelming frontrunner to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, according to a new internal poll conducted by the Africa Policy Lens (APL).
The survey, which engaged 30,681 NPP delegates across all 16 regions, shows Dr. Bawumia commanding a strong 63.8% of total support, positioning him far ahead of other contenders in the Party’s upcoming presidential primaries.
Coming in second is Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, who secured 28.9% of delegate support, followed by Dr. Bryan Acheampong with 4.6%, Yaw Osei Adutwum with 1.5%, and Kwabena Agyapong with 1.2%.
The data further reveals that Dr. Bawumia leads in 14 out of 16 regions, with Kennedy Agyapong performing strongest in the Central and Western North Regions.
According to the APL report, the results underscore the growing consensus within the NPP’s grassroots in favour of Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy, describing him as the figure “most likely to secure the Party’s nomination for the January 31st presidential primaries and subsequently the 2028 general elections.”
The survey attributes Dr. Bawumia’s commanding lead to his broad marketability, consistency, and strategic campaign approach, noting that his popularity “continues to resonate deeply among NPP delegates and supporters.”
APL President and Development Economist at the University of Ghana, Dr. George Domfe, stated that the poll’s findings are expected to influence internal Party discussions and planning as the NPP prepares for the crucial primaries.
“Party officials and delegates alike will closely watch these results as they prepare for the upcoming elections, emphasizing unity and rallying behind the preferred candidate to ensure victory,” Dr. Domfe noted.
Similarly, Dr. Hayford Ayerakwa, Director of Research and Lecturer at the University of Ghana, said the poll demonstrates Dr. Bawumia’s sustained appeal among delegates and his potential to “energize the Party’s campaign efforts for a decisive 2028 victory.”
