Bawumia Blames NDC Legal Battle for Death of Late Akwatia MP

Published:

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has alleged that the late NPP parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, died as a result of pressure and sleeplessness brought on by a court case filed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking in Twi during a courtesy call on the Chief of Wenchi in the Bono Region, Dr. Bawumia claimed the legal battle and what he described as intimidation from the NDC negatively impacted the late MP’s health.

“The NDC’s court case against the late Ernest Kumi, coupled with intimidation, caused him sleeplessness and raised his pressure. Twenty-six days after the court’s final verdict, he died,” Dr. Bawumia alleged.

The former Vice President was in Wenchi with a delegation of NPP executives and Minority Members of Parliament as part of campaign efforts ahead of the September 2 Akwatia by-election. He urged residents to rally behind the party’s candidate, Solomon Asumadu, to continue what he described as the development vision of the late Ernest Kumi.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the NPP remained the only party capable of delivering sustained progress across the country, insisting that retaining the Akwatia seat was crucial to consolidating the party’s development agenda.

The Wenchi visit is one of several campaign stops being made by the NPP leadership as the party steps up its grassroots mobilization in the lead-up to the by-election, which is expected to be fiercely contested by the ruling NDC.

Dr. Bawumia is also using the campaign trail to boost his own bid to secure the NPP’s presidential slot for the 2028 general elections, having formally filed his nomination to contest in the party’s upcoming primaries.
