Bagbin to mediate UKraine- Russia war

Published:

The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been appointed to the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.

The appointment, made by the IPU President, recognizes Speaker Bagbin’s integrity, impartiality, and track record in building trust among conflicting parties. He joins seven other eminent parliamentarians representing the six geopolitical groups of the IPU.

In a letter confirming the appointment, IPU Secretary-General Martin Chungong expressed confidence in Speaker Bagbin’s leadership, stating:

“We are confident that your leadership and experience will enhance the work and impact of the Task Force in its mission to support diplomatic efforts in seeking a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.”

Established in March 2022 as an ad-hoc body, the IPU Task Force has since served as a crucial platform for dialogue between Ukrainian and Russian parliamentarians. It has held more than 13 meetings, conducted a mission to Kyiv and Moscow in July 2022, and continues to hold consultations during IPU Assemblies.
