Akwatia By-Election: One Arrested After Chaos at NDC Office

Published:

Police in Akwatia have arrested one person following disturbances at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party office during the ongoing by-election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

The suspect was placed in a designated Black Maria, a police van used for transporting prisoners, after tensions flared when some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were allegedly spotted removing posters of the NDC candidate at a polling station.

The situation briefly sparked chaos at the NDC office, but swift intervention from security personnel helped restore order. Voting, according to election officials, has since continued without disruption.

Police have cautioned that any attempts to interfere with the electoral process, including acts of intimidation, vandalism, or violence, will be met with decisive action.

The Akwatia by-election has drawn significant national attention, with more than 50,000 registered voters expected to cast their ballots. The contest between the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu and the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo follows the passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Authorities, including the Electoral Commission and Ghana Police Service, have assured the public of a credible and peaceful process, with over 5,500 security officers deployed across the constituency.
