The UTAG Strike Suspension has been officially announced by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), effective Tuesday, 29 October 2024. The strike, which garnered significant attention, aimed to urge the government to ban all forms of mining, especially galamsey and prospecting in forest reserves, farms, and water bodies. All government efforts to engage stakeholders to halt the strike action proved futile.

In a statement released on Thursday (24 October), UTAG emphasised the damaging effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s water bodies, forest reserves, agricultural lands, and livelihoods. UTAG noted that it was their “civic responsibility to ensure that future generations of Ghana inherit a sustainable and healthy environment.”

“Our strike action has demonstrated significantly throughout the country our commitment to protecting and sustaining the environment for present and future generations. With the UTAG Strike Suspension, we are taking a step back to reassess our strategies while remaining vigilant in our advocacy for environmental protection.”

NEC has directed to suspend the strike action effective Tuesday, 29 October 2024, and is seeking members’ affirmation or otherwise of this directive. They showed gratitude to their members and stakeholders for the support during the strike and assured they will always stand up for the welfare of this country.
