TUC Urges President Mahama to Halt Public Sector Job Terminations

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately stop the ongoing mass terminations of public sector appointments, warning of the devastating impact on young Ghanaians and the country’s democratic reputation.

In a strongly worded statement, the TUC condemned the government’s decision to revoke appointments, particularly affecting teachers, nurses, and other professionals who have spent years pursuing education and struggling to secure employment.

“The mass termination of employment of teachers, nurses, and others, who have been educated at great cost to their families and the nation and who may have stayed at home for years struggling to obtain employment can be devastating for these young men and women,” the statement read.

The union further cautioned that these dismissals not only put thousands of livelihoods at risk but also erode patriotism and trust in the country’s governance system.

The terminations follow a directive issued by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, on February 10, 2025, which instructed all government institutions to revoke appointments made after December 7, 2024.

According to the directive, these appointments were deemed inconsistent with good governance principles and were therefore subject to cancellation. However, this move has sparked significant backlash, with critics arguing that it unfairly targets qualified young professionals who have legally secured their positions.

The TUC is urging the government to reverse the decision and consider the long-term consequences of such widespread job losses. The union stresses that employment stability is crucial in fostering economic growth and maintaining social trust in governance.
