Commercial transport operators are demanding the urgent rehabilitation of the Pokuase–Nsawam road, describing its current state as deplorable and a danger to motorists, commuters, and residents.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 14, the operators said the road had become nearly unmotorable, with its poor condition driving up operational costs through frequent vehicle repairs, spare parts replacement, and shortened vehicle lifespans.
They stressed that the problem affects not only commercial drivers but also all motorists travelling to destinations in the Eastern, Ashanti, and northern regions, disrupting daily life and economic activity along the busy corridor.
According to the operators, a recent engagement with the Minister for Roads and Highways yielded an assurance that the road would be restored to a satisfactory condition within six weeks. However, they said the deadline had passed without any improvement.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and other transport groups have given the government a one-week ultimatum to take what they described as “meaningful action” or face an indefinite protest that will see their vehicles parked.
The groups are also calling on motorists, commuters, and residents affected by the road’s condition to join the protest, framing it as a civic responsibility to pressure authorities into acting.
