Over 400 Displaced After Deadly Clashes in Sawla/Tuna Kalba

Published:

More than 400 residents of the Sawla/Tuna Kalba District in the Savannah Region have fled their homes following violent clashes in Gbinyiri, a farming community in the district.

The violence, which erupted on Sunday, 24 August 2025, stemmed from a land dispute between rival factions. What began as a disagreement quickly escalated into deadly confrontations, leaving at least 11 people dead and several others injured.

The displaced families are now seeking refuge in Subinso II, a farming and trading hub in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.

In an interview, the Assembly Member for Subinso II Electoral Area, Samuel Anane, confirmed the arrival of the displaced persons and appealed for urgent humanitarian aid.
“These people have lost everything and are in dire need of food, water, and basic supplies. I am calling on individuals, groups, and organizations to come to their aid,” he said.

The Wenchi Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC), led by Municipal Chief Executive Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, has visited the victims to assess their condition. Gyamfi pledged the Assembly’s support while urging reconciliation between the rival Gonja and Brefo families.
“The Assembly will do everything possible to support these families. But more importantly, we are appealing for peace to prevail,” she noted.

For many of the displaced, survival remains uncertain. Families who fled with only the clothes on their backs are struggling with shortages of food, shelter, and basic necessities, while coping with the trauma of losing loved ones and property.
