Several structures at the Kaajaano Fishing Community in the La Dadekotopon Municipality have been demolished in an early morning operation, leaving dozens of residents homeless and in distress.
The exercise, which reportedly took place around 6:00 a.m., involved the use of bulldozers and other heavy-duty equipment. Eyewitnesses say the demolition team was led by an individual identified only as “Gyato,” who was accompanied by a group of men overseeing the operation.
Residents described the exercise as sudden and unannounced, with many caught off guard as their homes were torn down. Families were seen scrambling to salvage personal belongings from the debris as structures were reduced to rubble.
The demolition has displaced numerous households, forcing affected individuals—many of whom are fisherfolk and traders—to seek temporary shelter under precarious conditions.
Some residents expressed shock and frustration over what they described as a lack of prior notice or official communication regarding the exercise.
“We woke up to the sound of bulldozers,” one resident recounted. “Before we could even understand what was happening, our homes were already being pulled down.”
The affected community members have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, to urgently intervene and provide relief for those displaced.
They are also demanding clarity on the authority behind the demolition, as uncertainty grows over the legality and circumstances surrounding the operation.
