The family of the late Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings has confirmed that the former First Lady will be laid to rest today, in a state funeral to be held at Independence Square in Accra. The ceremony will begin at 6 a.m. with the arrival of the cortege.
Nana Konadu, who passed away on October 23, 2025, will be honoured in what the family describes as the final and definitive funeral rites for a woman whose influence shaped decades of Ghana’s social and political development.
According to the family, the funeral will be held under the auspices of the President, reflecting the national significance of Nana Konadu’s decades-long work in championing women’s rights, child welfare, and grassroots development.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, 76, served as Ghana’s First Lady during her husband Jerry John Rawlings’ leadership — first in 1979 and later from 1981 to 2001, covering both military rule and constitutional democracy. She became widely known for her advocacy through the 31st December Women’s Movement, which spearheaded nationwide efforts in literacy, economic empowerment, and community development.
As the nation gathers this morning at Independence Square, Ghanaians will bid farewell to a dynamic and influential figure whose name remains synonymous with empowerment, resilience, and service.
