Do more to stop galamsey – Otumfuor tells Mahama

Published:

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a stern warning about the escalating threat of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, cautioning that if urgent action is not taken, the menace could “engulf the entire nation” and destroy Ghana’s future.

Speaking at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards Dinner held at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Saturday, November 8, 2025, the Asante King described the illegal mining trade as a “mafia-like” operation that has infiltrated deep into the fabric of society, undermining governance, the environment, and moral values.

“We are becoming more and more like a mafia situation, where if we are not very careful, it’s going to engulf all of us,” the Asantehene warned. “We have to take this issue very seriously. We joke about it or think it’s not serious, but it is.”

Otumfuo expressed disappointment at the failure of successive governments to tackle the galamsey crisis decisively, suggesting that political considerations and the pursuit of votes have hindered bold, lasting solutions.

“I have asked myself if it is because of politics, because of votes, that we cannot take firm decisions on these people. Unless we are all complicit, there is no reason why this matter cannot be dealt with seriously,” he stated.

The Asantehene called on chiefs, local authorities, and the media to take proactive roles in exposing and resisting illegal mining in their jurisdictions. He disclosed that parts of his own traditional area continue to suffer from galamsey activities, and he has instructed his chiefs to act decisively to protect their lands from further destruction.

Praising the role of the media, Otumfuo lauded journalists who risk their safety to report on environmental degradation and corruption, noting that their efforts are critical in promoting transparency and accountability.
