5 People Burnt to death in the Nkwanta South Conflict

Published:

Five people have been confirmed dead following renewed violence in the Nkwanta South Municipality, prompting a swift deployment of armoured vehicles and additional security personnel to restore calm.

In a statement issued on March 26, 2026, the Ghana Police Service said the victims, three males and two females, were discovered at two separate locations within the municipality by a joint security team. The team comprised personnel from the Police, Military, Bureau of National Investigations, Defence Intelligence, and the Ghana National Fire Service.

Although authorities have identified the victims, their names are yet to be released to the public.

Meanwhile, efforts to de-escalate tensions appear to be underway. The National Peace Council disclosed that chiefs and elders representing three factions involved in the conflict signed a declaration on the same day, committing to an immediate cessation of hostilities and halting the movement of firearms.

The agreement, which extends to allied groups, requires all parties to remain within their respective land boundaries as ongoing legal processes continue. It also mandates traditional leaders to caution their members—especially the youth—against engaging in any form of armed confrontation, regardless of provocation.

To ensure compliance, the Council announced plans to establish a joint monitoring committee. It further urged security agencies to carry out their duties professionally and investigate all reported incidents thoroughly. Residents have also been encouraged to cooperate with authorities by volunteering credible information.

In a separate statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police John Nchor, Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Region, the Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the killings and identify those responsible. No arrests have been announced so far.
