10 Dead in Accra-Kumasi Highway Crash Involving Bus and Diesel Tanker

Published:

A high-speed collision between a VIP passenger bus and a diesel trailer has left 10 people injured on the Accra–Kumasi Highway in the early hours of Monday, April 13, 2026.

The accident occurred at the notorious Mile 44 stretch, a section widely regarded as a hotspot for road crashes. Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in Suhum were alerted at approximately 04:24 a.m. and swiftly dispatched to the scene.

Preliminary reports from the GNFS indicate that the crash was allegedly caused by a wrongful overtaking attempt by the driver of the VIP bus. The vehicle, carrying 33 passengers at the time, collided head-on with a diesel trailer, leaving both heavy-duty vehicles partially damaged.

A seven-member rescue team arrived within minutes and identified 10 casualties—nine males and one female, who sustained varying degrees of injury. Fire officers worked quickly to secure the scene, assist victims, and prevent further danger.

“The fire crew secured the scene and safely concluded operations before returning to base,” the Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS confirmed in an official statement.

The collision briefly disrupted traffic along the busy highway as emergency personnel, including police, cleared debris and stabilized the diesel trailer to avert potential fuel leaks or fire outbreaks.

The Accra–Kumasi Highway has long been considered one of the most dangerous road corridors in Ghana, with wrongful overtaking frequently cited as a leading cause of fatal accidents. Authorities have once again used the incident to caution long-distance drivers to exercise restraint and vigilance—especially during early morning hours when poor visibility and driver fatigue can significantly increase the risk of crashes.
