Commuters across Ghana should prepare for a 20% increase in transport fares starting Monday, March 17, 2025, as the Alliance of Drivers Ghana has announced a fare adjustment in response to rising operational costs.
The drivers’ union attributes the hike to the surging cost of fuel, engine oil, and vehicle spare parts, which they say have significantly impacted their earnings.
Speaking to Citi News, the Alliance’s National Public Relations Officer, Kwaku Boateng, explained that drivers have been struggling with escalating costs for months and have reached a point where they can no longer absorb the burden without passing it on to passengers.
“The 2025 budget came, and we heard nothing about tariff reductions, yet the Finance Minister stood and spoke the whole day,” Boateng expressed, voicing frustration over the government’s lack of intervention in addressing drivers’ financial struggles.
He further pleaded with commuters to understand the necessity of the fare increase, emphasizing that the rising cost of engine oil and spare parts has made it difficult for transport operators to stay afloat.
