Public Transport Fares to Increase by 20% from August 8

Published:

Public transport fares across Ghana will go up by 20% effective Friday, August 8, 2025, the Road Transport Operators have announced. The adjustment, made in line with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares, will apply to all shared taxis, intra-city (trotro), intercity (long-distance), and haulage services.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 5, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) explained that the decision was driven by three main factors:
1. The failure of prices of spare parts, goods, and services to drop in response to the earlier 15% reduction in fares on May 21, 2025.
2. An increase in operational costs following the introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy, which has pushed fuel prices up by about 8%.
3. Rising vehicle maintenance expenses due to the deteriorating state of roads nationwide.

The GRTCC has instructed transport operators to comply strictly with the new fares and display them prominently at all loading terminals to ensure transparency.

The Council also appealed to drivers, commuters, and the general public to cooperate for a smooth rollout of the new pricing structure.
