Bawumia Moves to Unite NPP…Leads reconciliation drive as party eyes 2028

Published:

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has initiated a series of high-level engagements with his former competitors in the party’s presidential primaries, in a strategic move aimed at restoring internal cohesion and strengthening the party’s position ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The development was disclosed by Sammi Awuku, a senior aide to Dr Bawumia, during an interview on Peace FM. According to him, the outreach forms part of a broader reconciliation effort following what he described as an intensely contested primary.

Dr Bawumia was re-elected on January 31, 2026, as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections after defeating notable contenders, including Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Kwabena Agyepong, Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Bryan Acheampong.

Despite the general acceptance of the results by party delegates, the competitive nature of the primaries sparked concerns about potential divisions within the party, prompting calls for deliberate reconciliation efforts.

Hon. Awuku revealed that Dr Bawumia has already held a private meeting with Mr Agyapong, describing the interaction as productive and forward-looking.

“He has made a personal and private visit to his brother Kennedy Agyapong. They had extensive conversations on how the party can unite in the aftermath of the primaries ahead of 2028,” Mr Awuku stated.

He added that Dr Bawumia left the meeting encouraged, having received firm assurances from Mr. Agyapong of his commitment to support the party’s agenda going forward.

Mr Awuku further disclosed that similar engagements have taken place with the other former aspirants, all of whom have reportedly pledged their support to the flagbearer.

The reconciliation initiative, he stressed, is central to the NPP’s broader strategy to consolidate internal unity, heal post-primary tensions, and position the party strongly for the next electoral cycle.
