A newly acquired bus under Ghana’s Metro Mass Transit (MMT) fleet reportedly broke down shortly after undergoing an official inspection by the Deputy Minister for Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey.
The incident, which occurred moments after the inspection exercise, drew immediate public attention as individuals at the scene were seen pushing the bus in an attempt to get it moving again.
Eyewitnesses described the situation as unexpected, particularly given that the vehicle was part of a newly introduced fleet intended to improve public transportation services across the country.
The breakdown has since sparked discussions about the condition, quality, and roadworthiness of the buses procured for Metro Mass Transit. Critics have raised concerns about whether adequate technical checks were conducted prior to the rollout of the vehicles.
The new buses form part of broader government efforts to modernise Ghana’s public transport system, reduce commuter pressure, and improve mobility, especially in urban centres.
While officials are yet to provide a detailed explanation regarding the cause of the breakdown, the incident has intensified calls for greater transparency in the procurement and testing processes of public transport assets.
As of now, neither the Transport Ministry nor Metro Mass Transit has issued a comprehensive statement addressing the incident.
