Oti Region Welcomes New DVLA Ultra Centre

Published:

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has commissioned a new ultra-modern centre at Guaman in the Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region, a move expected to enhance road safety administration and improve access to licensing services in the enclave.

The newly inaugurated Buem Ultra Centre is aimed at decentralising DVLA operations and reducing the burden on residents who previously had to travel long distances to access vehicle registration and driver licensing services.

Delivering the welcome address, DVLA Operations Manager Francis Asuka Boakye described the facility as a major milestone in the Authority’s mandate to protect Ghana’s roads through efficient licensing and vehicle registration systems.

The state-of-the-art facility was financed and constructed by Mr. Osei Yaw, whose contribution was widely applauded during the ceremony for supporting the expansion of public services in the region.

The Benkumhene of the Buem Traditional Area and Chief of Guaman, Nana Obeng Offori Appel VI, assured the DVLA and other stakeholders of the traditional authority’s full support to ensure smooth and successful operations of the centre.

Municipal Chief Executive for Jasikan, Parke Davies Magyigbe, noted that the commissioning signals steady development within Buem and Jasikan. He explained that residents have for years incurred significant cost and inconvenience traveling outside the municipality for DVLA services. According to him, the establishment of the centre will generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities while stimulating local economic activity.

The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, described the project as a shining example of effective public-private collaboration in driving development. He cautioned motorists to renew their documents promptly and warned that enforcement measures would be intensified to clamp down on defaulters in a bid to strengthen road safety compliance. He subsequently commissioned the facility.

Minister for Sports and Recreation and Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Iddie Adams, underscored the impact of leadership in accelerating development. He indicated that sustained advocacy and stakeholder engagement played a critical role in bringing the project to fruition. He urged staff to uphold professionalism, deliver quality services, and desist from extorting clients. He revealed that several millions of cedis were invested in the project and stressed the need for integrity in its operations.

Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, stated that the centre will eliminate the frequent excuse of long-distance travel for DVLA services within the Oti Region. He disclosed that Buem is the first area in the region to receive a DVLA office and credited the persistent efforts of the Buem MP for the achievement.

Mr. Kotey further revealed that within one year under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, 13 DVLA offices have been commissioned nationwide. He also announced major reforms within the Authority, including the introduction of embedded chip number plates to curb robbery and improve vehicle identification systems.

Additionally, the DVLA will roll out biometric driver’s licences with instant card printing for renewals, while new applicants will continue to undergo the standard three-month processing period.

Buem will now have its own designated private vehicle registration code, “BG”, representing Buem Guaman.
