The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Usmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has congratulated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on his victory in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary, describing the outcome as a strong affirmation of Ghana’s democratic values and religious pluralism.
In a statement issued after the party’s congress, the respected Islamic cleric commended the NPP for organising a peaceful and orderly primary, noting that the process reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy and constitutional normalcy.
He also praised the other contestants for accepting the outcome of the election in a spirit of reconciliation and unity.
“The decision of the delegates is a clear manifestation that Ghana is not a theocracy but a democracy beautified by religious pluralism,” the National Chief Imam stated.
Sheikh Sharubutu further acknowledged the roles played by the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission in ensuring that the primary election was conducted in a transparent, peaceful and accountable manner.
Dr. Bawumia emerged victorious in the NPP’s presidential primary, securing the mandate of delegates to lead the party into the 2028 general election.
