GHANA MOURNS: Legendary Gospel Musician Yaw Sarpong Passes On

Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has passed away. He reportedly died at the Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

The news of his death was confirmed by close family sources and friends within the creative industry, including renowned sound engineer Fred Kyei Mensah, popularly known as Fredyma, who announced the passing in a Facebook post.

Yaw Sarpong was a towering figure in Ghanaian gospel music and a pioneer of the genre. As leader of the renowned Asomafo Gospel Band, he produced numerous timeless gospel classics that have shaped Christian music in Ghana for decades. His work earned him immense respect within the Christian community and the wider music industry.

Over the years, many young gospel artistes have cited Yaw Sarpong as a major influence, crediting his musical excellence, discipline and spiritual depth for inspiring their own careers.

His death comes barely a month after the passing of Maame Tiwaa, a key member of the Asomafo Gospel Band, dealing another heavy blow to the gospel music fraternity.

In recognition of his immense contribution to gospel music, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards. The award celebrated his decades-long dedication to gospel ministry through music and his lasting impact on generations of musicians and worshippers.

Following the announcement of his death, tributes have begun pouring in from fellow musicians, church leaders, fans and industry stakeholders, all paying homage to an artiste whose legacy will continue to resonate for generations.

Yaw Sarpong’s contribution to Ghanaian gospel music remains indelible, and he will be remembered not only for his musical brilliance but also for his unwavering commitment to spreading the gospel through song.
