NDC Won’t Support A Mahama Third Term — Fifi Kwetey Reveals

Published:

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has firmly dismissed renewed speculation about a possible third-term agenda for President John Dramani Mahama, reaffirming the party’s commitment to Ghana’s Constitution and democratic principles.

Speaking in an interview, Fifi Kwetey, stated that the party would not support any attempt to amend the Constitution to extend presidential tenure for a Mahama third term bid regardless of its numerical strength in Parliament.

According to him, Ghana remains a shining example of democratic transition in sub-Saharan Africa, largely due to its respect for constitutional term limits and orderly transfer of power. He noted that these democratic credentials continue to inspire other countries across the region.

He stressed that the NDC would never endorse actions that undermine the Constitution, adding that President Mahama has already made his stance clear by shutting down discussions suggesting any intention to seek a third term.

“We at no point should ever encourage a situation where there is a disruption in our constitutional stipulations. The president has spoken about that and clearly he did well because he didn’t want to allow such conversations to continue as if he is entertaining it,” Mr. Kwetey said.

The NDC General Secretary further indicated that although the party currently enjoys a strong parliamentary majority, it would not abuse that advantage to push through constitutional changes for personal or political interests.

“The party itself that has promised to ensure that we do what is right for the country has to ensure that, in this spirit of reset, even though we have such a huge majority in Parliament, we use it only to do what is good for the country and not try to change the Constitution because we are trying to make maybe one person happy,” he explained.

Mr. Kwetey reiterated the party’s unequivocal position, stressing that both the NDC and President Mahama remain aligned on the issue.
