Unpaid Nurses and Midwives Slam Government Over ‘Insulting’ One-Month Salary Payment

Published:

The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives has issued a stern demand to the government, insisting on the immediate settlement of all outstanding salary arrears owed to its members. The group says the recent payment of just one month’s salary—after nearly a year of work, is not only insufficient but “an insult” to the entire nursing fraternity.

In a statement, the coalition confirmed that its members had received one month’s salary in November, acknowledging the payment as “a small step” that demonstrates the impact of their collective pressure. However, it emphasised that the gesture does little to alleviate the severe hardship many of the affected health workers continue to face.

According to the group, thousands of nurses and midwives have endured almost 11 to 12 months of unpaid labour, resulting in crippling debt, eviction threats, hunger, psychological distress, and what they describe as “daily humiliation.”

“Our members have endured debt, eviction threats, hunger, psychological stress, and daily humiliation, only to finally receive a single month’s pay. This is not relief but an insult to the Nursing and Midwifery fraternity,” the statement said.

The coalition is now urging government to submit a clear and written payment plan for all outstanding arrears by the first week of December 2025. It warned that patience is running thin as the year draws to a close with no definitive roadmap for the settlement of their dues.

“As we enter the final month of the year, we expect the Government of Ghana and the Ministry of Health to match our sacrifice with fairness, respect, and action because the hardship is unbearable, the delay is unjustifiable, and the world is still watching,” it added.

Despite their frustration, the coalition reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful engagement in resolving the matter. It also extended appreciation to the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives Ghana (UPNMG), media organisations, bloggers, and other stakeholders for supporting their campaign for timely salaries.
