UG Medical student dies by suicide amid depression

Published:

A third-year medical student at the University of Ghana’s Korle-Bu campus, Mawutor Kwame Dedey, has died in what authorities describe as a suspected suicide, sparking widespread discussions about the growing mental health pressures faced by medical students in Ghana.

The incident occurred on November 15, 2025, after colleagues reported that Mawutor had gone missing earlier in the day. His death has left many students devastated, with peers noting that he had shown signs of emotional distress and had been struggling with depression in recent months.

Students and alumni have taken to social media to express shock and frustration, highlighting what they describe as “a silent mental health crisis” within Ghana’s medical schools. Several posts referenced the intense academic workload, high expectations, and limited support systems that contribute to psychological strain.

The University of Ghana Medical School has yet to issue an official statement, but many are calling on authorities to prioritize mental health policies and expand resources to prevent similar incidents in the future.
