Kwabena Agyepong disqualified from NPP Race?

Published:

The race for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership is intensifying ahead of the January 31, 2026 presidential primaries, with fresh reports suggesting that Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, one of the party’s leading aspirants, may have been disqualified from the contest.

Though the party has not issued any official statement confirming or denying the reports, sources within the NPP indicate that the development has sparked anxiety among delegates and supporters of the former General Secretary.

According to emerging reports, the alleged disqualification stems from issues raised during the vetting process, though details remain sketchy. Party insiders suggest the National Vetting Committee has recommended his disqualification because of failing to pay the GHS 4.6 million development fee and the National Executive Council has approved his disqualification, but no official explanation has yet been made public. The National Vetting Committe has gone on to issue Kwabena Agyapong 48 hours clemency period, failing to pay within 48 hours will see him disqualified from the National Presidential Primaries on January 31, 2026.

Mr. Agyapong, who has positioned himself as a reformist voice within the NPP, is seen by many as a candidate representing integrity, internal discipline, and a return to the party’s founding values. His campaign has so far focused on restoring trust and unity within the party as it heads into a crucial election year.

The report of his disqualification has therefore triggered strong reactions among party faithful, with some calling for transparency and fairness in the vetting process.

The NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee is expected to issue a formal statement in the coming days to clarify the status of all vetted aspirants, as tension builds within the ruling party.

The January 31 contest is expected to be a keenly fought one, with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyapong, and other hopefuls all vying for the opportunity to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.
