Dennis Miracles Aboagye Calls for NPP Unity After Akwatia By-Election Defeat

Published:

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2026 flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on members of the party to remain united as they prepare for the 2028 general elections.

His appeal comes in the wake of the NPP’s loss in the Akwatia parliamentary by-election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, where the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, emerged victorious.

In a Facebook post following the results, Aboagye acknowledged the challenges ahead for the NPP but stressed that unity would be the party’s strongest weapon.
“Dear Patriots, the journey towards 2028 is never promised to be an easy one. It’s surely going to be a tough one. There will be bruises and there will be scars, visible enough to remind us of the struggle. One thing is assured, if we stick together and work together, we shall win,” he wrote.

He urged supporters not to dwell on defeat or internal divisions but to channel their energy into rebuilding the party for future success. “Let’s not feed into the narratives of the NDC and beat ourselves too much. The pity party should end as we work to fix all that needs to be fixed on our quest towards Election 2028,” Aboagye stated.

Commending party volunteers for their dedication, he encouraged them to keep contributing to the NPP’s cause. “Our weaknesses and strengths should be mixed together into a cocktail of resources to balance the scale. Where we fall short, let’s count on the strength of others as we push toward a common goal. We have only one opponent—the NDC—and that should be our only focus, even in the midst of our internal contests. We are bouncing back stronger!” he added.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission declared Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC as the new Member of Parliament for Akwatia after he secured 18,199 votes against 15,235 votes for the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu. A total of 33,518 valid votes were cast across 119 polling stations.

Returning officer Eric Gyamfi, announcing the results, said: “By the power vested in me, I hereby declare Bernard Bediako Baidoo as MP-elect.”

The NPP’s defeat in Akwatia has sparked renewed conversations about the party’s internal cohesion, with party leaders emphasizing unity as the pathway to reclaiming electoral strength ahead of 2028.
