Aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has lashed out at President John Dramani Mahama and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, accusing them of politicising the judiciary.
Speaking on Channel One TV, Mr. Aboagye described the move as a direct attack on the independence of Ghana’s judiciary and a dangerous precedent for democratic governance.
“If this is the kind of petition that can get a Chief Justice removed, then trust me, the NDC and President Mahama have basically destroyed our judiciary. What they have done is that, as we speak, they have now solidified and confirmed the fact that they have set up a biased and political judiciary. Now, whoever the president appoints as CJ is NDC,” he argued.
Mr. Aboagye further recalled past comments by President Mahama in which he allegedly promised to appoint NDC judges to “balance out” what he described as the dominance of NPP-appointed judges.
“Because this is a man who said that he is going to appoint NDC judges to the bench to balance out the NPP judges. He said that with his mouth, and it is a shame, an embarrassment, and I do not think Justice Torkornoo should ever be worried about this. Her time will come,” Aboagye added.
The dismissal of Chief Justice Torkornoo has stirred intense political debate, with critics warning that it undermines the independence of the judiciary. While the Presidency maintains that the decision followed due constitutional process under Article 146, opposition voices continue to argue that the process was politically motivated.
