Former vice-president and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has rubbished the governing National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) 24-hour economy policy, describing it as a political gimmick designed to woo voters ahead of the last general elections.
Speaking on Thursday (28 August 2025) after submitting his nomination forms to contest for re-election as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 polls, Dr Bawumia said the NDC’s promises have already begun to unravel, exposing what he called a deliberate attempt to deceive Ghanaians.
“The NDC promised to triple jobs and create new ones through a 24-hour economy, but it is evident that it was just a political gimmick. It is already becoming clear that they do not intend to fulfil the lofty promises they made to Ghanaians in their quest for power,” he stated.
The former vice-president further cast doubt on other commitments made by the Mahama administration, including the pledge to pay cocoa farmers at least GHC6,000 per bag, repeal Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 to boost the fight against illegal mining, and stabilise the Bank of Ghana’s gold purchase programme.
He also cited what he described as worsening economic conditions under the NDC, highlighting a 50% decline in remittances due to foreign exchange misalignments as proof of mismanagement.
Dr Bawumia insisted that the NPP had already laid the foundation for a modernised economy through bold reforms implemented during its previous administration. He pointed to initiatives such as mobile money interoperability, the Ghana Card, Agenda 111, and the Gold for Oil programme as evidence of practical policies with measurable impact.
“My track record as vice-president shows my ability to deliver results through rich, practical ideas, not mere campaign slogans,” he said.
