GRNMA Demands Arrest of Suspect in Ridge Hospital Attack

Published:

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has called on the Ghana Police Service to expedite the arrest of Ralph Saint Williams and his accomplices following a violent incident at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

A video circulating on social media captured a heated confrontation between relatives of a patient and some health workers at the hospital’s emergency department. The clash, which disrupted medical services, has since sparked widespread concern over the safety of health professionals.

In a statement issued after a National Executive Committee meeting on August 21, GRNMA described the arrests as critical to deterring similar acts of violence in the future. The Association also emphasized the need to safeguard the mental health of nurses and midwives who were left traumatized by the incident.

“The Ghana Police Service must intensify their efforts in getting Ralph Saint Williams and his accomplices arrested as soon as practically possible. This will serve as a deterrent and assure nurses and other health workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) of their security and mitigate the impact of the trauma in terms of their mental health,” the statement read.

While assuring patients that nursing and midwifery services at Ridge Hospital would not be disrupted, GRNMA reaffirmed its commitment to protect its members under the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) and its constitution.

The Association also urged employers to strengthen security across health facilities and provide psychological support for the nurse injured in the attack. It further recommended enhanced staff training to help health workers cope with work-related stress.

GRNMA highlighted broader challenges within Ghana’s health sector, including staff shortages, inadequate logistics, and outdated medical equipment, stressing the need for greater respect and collaboration between the public and health professionals.
