A fire has swept through the Accra Tourist Information Centre, sending panic through the capital as thick smoke engulfed the area and visitors fled the scene. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) swiftly deployed personnel to combat the blaze, which broke out under still-unclear circumstances.
The exact time of the incident remains unconfirmed, but the first public footage of the fire was shared by Kofi Okyere-Darko (KOD), Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President. His Facebook video showed scenes of chaos, with smoke pouring from the building as people scrambled to safety.
So far, there have been no reports of injuries or casualties. Firefighters remain on the scene working to contain the blaze and assess the damage.
“We are doing everything possible to stop the fire from spreading to nearby structures,” a GNFS spokesperson said. “Our priority is to ensure everyone is safe and to preserve what we can of the facility.”
The extent of the destruction has not yet been determined, but the Centre is widely known as a key location for cultural exhibitions, events, and tourist engagement. Its loss, even temporarily, could have ripple effects on tourism and local businesses.
Authorities have begun investigations to determine the cause of the fire. Officials are expected to release a formal statement once preliminary findings are available.
