The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun a spirited regrouping effort as it sets its sights on reclaiming political power in the 2028 general elections. Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, April 16, the party’s Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, outlined the party’s renewed focus and aggressive posture as it moves from introspection to active preparation.
“We are very focused. We are very determined. We are very sure,” Haruna declared. “Based on the discussions that we had before the presentation of the report, we are prepared to fight on in 2028.”
According to Mohammed, the NPP’s National Council convened to receive a report from a committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Ocquaye. The committee was mandated to investigate the causes of the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections and propose necessary reforms.
“You remember that on the second of January, we had a National Council meeting. An ad hoc committee was set up to look at two issues — to assess the reasons for our loss in the 2024 general elections, and to recommend possible amendments and restructuring of the party,” he explained.
The committee, given a three-month timeline, submitted its report on April 16, following a meeting of the National Executive Committee. Haruna described the atmosphere during the submission as “charged with energy and purpose.”
“Knowing the NPP and where we have come from, the members at National Council were very focused, very determined, and very sure. It showed how resilient and prepared we are to wrestle power from this very incompetent government,” he stated.
In a passionate and unapologetic tone, Haruna criticized the current administration, labeling it as incompetent and emphasizing that the NPP is ready to replace it.
“This incompetent government must be replaced. We are ready. The NPP is coming back,” he charged.
He added that the party’s strength lies in its deep-rooted tradition and historical values, which continue to drive its mission forward.
“The move of the people did stand with the tradition and history of the New Patriotic Party,” he said.
Signaling a shift in the party’s posture, Haruna noted that the NPP is now ready for action, armed with insight and clarity on past missteps.
“We know where we fell. We know what went wrong. And now we are going to rise again,” he concluded.
