President John Mahama has shared a candid reflection on the aftermath of the 2024 general elections, revealing that he was asleep when then-Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia called to concede defeat and congratulate him on his victory.

Speaking to members of the clergy in Kumasi on Sunday, March 2, 2025, President Mahama recounted the moment, describing it as a significant display of political maturity and respect for Ghana’s democratic process.

According to him, the concession call came within 48 hours after the polls had closed, catching him by surprise. He admitted that he had expected a longer wait for the official results from the Electoral Commission and did not anticipate such a swift acknowledgment from his opponent.

Mahama recalled being woken up by his aides, who informed him that he had an important call. Initially confused, he asked who wanted to speak to him, only to be told that it was his “brother,” the Vice President.

The early concession was widely commended at the time, reinforcing Ghana’s reputation for peaceful democratic transitions. Mahama’s latest remarks highlight the significance of that moment in the country’s electoral history and the role of political leaders in ensuring national stability.
